  21. READ.ME size & checksum (CRC-32) vary with editing. Others should be
  22. consistant.

  24. The plus sign (+) is currently being assigned a value of zero in the
  25. checksum of element sets. However, most of my updating programs (IT, Graf
  26. Trak II in particular) want a value of two (2) for the plus sign. I've
  27. implemented two possible ways to fix files for this eventuality.
  28.  
  29. If you want to leave the plus sign in the file, you may start the program
  30. with the /Z option. This assigns the value of two (2) to the plus sign.
  31. Because of this if you run the fix checksums part of the program, any
  32. element sets with plus signs will fail causing the program to create new
  33. files with corrected checksums reflecting the value of two for the plus
  34. sign. Then, programs that use this convention will accept element sets for
  35. input once again.
  36.  
  37. The second way around this problem is to remove the plus sign. Element
  38. Manager will strip a plus sign and replace it with a blank space. It will
  39. then intentionally corrupt the checksum value, and run the fix checksums
  40. routines of the program. You will end up with a file with no plus signs and
  41. correct checksums for all elements.
  42.  
  43. If the size of Element Manager's main program is somewhat disconcerting,
  44. you might think about using PKLITE or a similar program. These programs
  45. shrink, implode, compact (whatever) the program to a smaller file that will
  46. still execute from DOS.
  47.  
  48. If you have a monochrome system you should delete ELEMAN.CFG (color
  49. configuration file) and rename MONO.CFG to ELEMAN.CFG. Or you can start the
  50. program including /M with any other parameters you specify on the command
  51. line.

  53. To quickstart just type:
  54.  
  55. ELEMAN /Ifilename.ext
  56.  
  57. where filename.ext is the name of a file containing some 2-line elements.
  58.  
  59. If you've downloaded this file and don't have any 2-line element sets to
  60. "play" with, then enter:
  61.  
  62. ELEMAN /Ieleman.doc
  63.  
  64. This will start the program and load the DOC file as it's element file.
  65. Since the documentation contains lots of examples of 2-line element sets
  66. for the purposes of discussion, this will provide you with a few elements
  67. to play around with. Note that many of these elements are duplicates. When
  68. you start the program in this manner, it will extract only the 2-line
  69. element sets contained in the DOC file and output them to a new file named
  70. FIXED.TLE. It will then load FIXED.TLE into memory. You can go to the
  71. View/Edit area of the program (option available from the File Utilities
  72. Menu) and look at the resulting output. If you wish to clean up this file
  73. (ie: remove the duplicates) go to the File Utilities Menu and select the
  74. Duplicate checker. This function will extract only the most recent set of
  75. elements for each Norad Catalog Number Satellite and write them to the file
  76. NODUPS.TLE. To load this cleaned up file, select option 1 from the File
  77. Utilities Menu and type in NODUPS.TLE. You can edit the elements, examine
  78. them for information on their age, the perigee and apogee altitudes and
  79. more.

  81. The program is really written for absolute addicts of satellite tracking
  82. who keep lots of elements handy. If you're a beginner in tracking, read the
  83. DOC file. It will explain what elements are all about and where you can
  84. find more up to date element sets and various shareware satellite tracking
  85. programs.

  87. If you're an experienced user, and want to use some of the advanced
  88. functions to select out elements by certain criteria then, I'd recommend
  89. you review the DOC file to learn of the capabilities of the program. There
  90. really isn't any quickstart for you folks. However, if you absolutly abhor
  91. doc files, try typing:
  92.  
  93. ELEMAN /H
  94.  
  95. This will print out a help screen. You may be able to extract enough info
  96. to get you started.
  97.  
  98. An ELEMAN.CFG file is provided. You might want to change this file to force
  99. color operation or use different default filenames. From the File Utilities
  100. Menu select Edit Configuration. Don't try and do this with a text editor
  101. until you are familiar with the meaning of each entry in the .CFG file.

  103. note: Elemant Manager will "Never" corrupt an input file. The only
  104. exception to this is the FIXED.TLE file. The program will regularly
  105. overwrite this file. If you import element from a text file, I'd recommend
  106. you save the fixed elements to a new file immediatly so you won't lose
  107. them. However, as long as you don't erase the source text file, you can
  108. always recreate the FIXED.TLE file.
